Fodor’s calls a Maine locale one of the ‘eeriest, spookiest, and down-right scariest’ in America
A horror author has a little something to do with it.
A cemetery that inspired American horror writer Stephen King has made Bangor, Maine, one of the scariest small towns in America, according to Fodor’s.

Even though it’s technically a city, the publication named Bangor among the eeriest, spookiest, and down-right scariest small towns in America because of Mount Hope Cemetery.
“It’s here you’ll find those spooky, cobweb-filled corners of American life that frighten us the most,” wrote Fodor’s about the locales on the list.
Scenes from the 1989 movie “Pet Sematary,” based on Stephen King’s 1983 novel of the same name, were filmed at the 1836 Mount Hope Cemetery, one of America’s oldest garden cemeteries.
“King is said to have come up with character names and some of his scariest story ideas here,” wrote Fodor’s about the cemetery.
The author and king of creep, a longtime resident of Bangor, also has a mansion in the town.
