New England’s best hotels range from a quaint countryside getaway in Vermont to a Gilded Age mansion in Rhode Island, according to Conde Nast Traveler readers.
Last week, the travel publication released the top 40 hotels in New England as part of its 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards.
The Windham Hill Inn in West Townshend, Vt. snagged the No. 1 spot. Located less than three hours from Boston and New York City, the property is tucked away on 160 acres in Southern Vermont’s Green Mountains and feels “like you’ve stumbled onto some quaint cottage in the English countryside,” CNT wrote.
Amenities include a clay tennis court, spa, heated swimming pool, a four-mile network of hiking trials, and concierge service that includes butler-drawn baths. Visitors can stay in one of 22 guest rooms in the main house, in converted barn suites, or in a private cottage. The rooms are furnished with antiques and many have jetted spa tubs and fireplaces.
The hotel’s restaurant, which is open to the public, serves gourmet farm-to-table fare that includes fresh, local produce and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Editors compiled the Readers’ Choice Awards based on the results of an online survey available to readers between April 1, 2018, and June 30, 2018. The survey contained listings of hotels, resorts, islands, airports, airlines, cities, and cruise ships. More than 429,000 readers submitted ratings, according to the publication.
