Spirit Airlines is getting new seats. Spirit Airlines

If you fly Spirit Airlines out of Logan Airport late this fall, you may notice a difference in your seat.

The Florida-based low-cost carrier announced on Monday that it will debut new seats in November that “maximize usable legroom.” Usable legroom, according to the airline, is the distance from the center of the back of the seat cushion to the outer edges of the seat in front.

The seats, which were created by UK-based Acro Aircraft Seating, will have thicker padding, ergonomically-designed lumbar support, bigger tray tables, an elevated literature pocket, and nearly an inch of additional pre-recline, according to the airline. Customers sitting in middle seats will also enjoy more room, since the middle seats will gain an extra inch of width — 18 inches compared to 17 inches for the window and aisle seats.

“According to ergonomics experts, these innovative enhancements allow for a wider range of healthy postures and movements, offering an additional two inches of usable legroom compared to industry-standard flatback seats with the same pitch,” wrote the airline in a press release.

Spirit’s “Big Front Seat,” larger seats with more legroom that customers can book for an extra fee, are also getting a makeover. The new seats will have additional memory foam added to both the seat cushion and ergonomically-improved headrest. The seats were designed by HAECO Cabin Solutions. The new seats will be black with the airline’s signature yellow as a border.

“Last year I signed a pledge to look at every facet of our Guest experience and determine where we could improve,” said Ted Christie, president and CEO of Spirit Airlines, in a press release. “This investment in our seats and onboard experience is a direct result of that commitment, and it also allows us to enhance our product value while maintaining our industry-leading cost structure. We have listened to our Guests, and we are responding with these new, more comfortable seats.”

Spirit customers can look forward to even more changes to its planes. The airline says it will share plans for a new cabin redesign this November, which will include updated branding and a new modern look.
