Flights canceled, delayed at Logan Airport after widespread technology outage

Flights at Logan Airport are being affected by a widespread technology outage on Friday.

A global technology outage has grounded flights and knocked banks and hospital systems offline, reported the Associated Press, which noted that the issue is not believed to be a security incident or cyberattack, according to Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

In the U.S., the FAA said Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Allegiant Air had all been grounded Friday morning, reported the AP.

By 9:20 a.m., there were more than 2,900 flight delays in the U.S. and more than 1,280 cancellations, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. At Logan Airport, there were 148 delays and 36 cancellations. Of those, Delta had the most disruptions with 21 canceled and 38 delayed flights.

Wrote Delta in a travel alert: “A disruption caused by a Global IT Outage is resulting in a Ground Stop affecting our operation systemwide. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with On-Time Flight Notification.“

Massport posted the following on X at 6:45 a.m.: “Due to a global computer outage affecting airlines, many flights are being delayed or cancelled. Please check with your airline before coming to the airport.”

Journalists at Logan Airport reported Friday morning that overhead announcements at the airport warned customers of ground delays.
