If you tried to draw a straight line along the coast of Maine, it would be about 250 miles long. But when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration took the time to measure every twisting inlet and jutting peninsula, they found that Maine has around 3,478 miles of coastline, more than the state of California.
There’s so much to explore in those thousands of miles, from the thriving city of Portland to the vast natural beauty of Acadia National Park, a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts for over a century. When President Obama authorized turning 87,5000 acres of Maine woods into a protected federal parkland Wednesday, he tacitly acknowledged what many already know: Maine is full of natural treasures worth conserving.
