The Mandarin Oriental is getting a $15 million makeover

A Back Bay hotel recently named among the 10 best hotels in Massachusetts is getting a $15 million makeover.

Mandarin Oriental, Boston will debut new guest rooms and event spaces in April after a four-month renovation.
“Over the last 10 years, Mandarin Oriental, Boston has become an important part of the Boston community, and this renovation will further enhance the accommodation and facilities, reinforcing the hotel’s reputation as the best luxury hotel in the city,” said Philipp Knuepfer, the hotel’s general manager, in a press release.
New York-based Champalimaud Design, the company working on the project, “has approached the renovation of the guest rooms and suites from a residential point of view, incorporating both early New England design and classic Chinoiserie, the European interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions,” according to the release.
The hotel’s 148 guest rooms and suites will feature bespoke fabrics and new technology such as 65-inch flat screen TVs. The hotel’s premier suites will gain kitchenettes. The guest room bathrooms will receive new paint, wall coverings, mirrors, and lighting.

The hotel’s 10,000-square-feet of event spaces will become “ornate jewel boxes” after the renovation, according to the release, complete with “opulent and creamy neutral tones with complementary accents that give each room its own personality.”
The hotel’s spa will also get an update, gaining three new treatment rooms and refreshed wellness amenities.

Earlier this month, Mandarin Oriental, Boston was named among the 10 best hotels in Massachusetts by U.S. News & World Report. What’s more: The property was named among 41 hotels across the U.S. that have consistently ranked in the top 10 percent since the publication’s inaugural ranking in 2011.
Mandarin Oriental, Boston has remained open throughout the renovation.
