Logan Airport will have one fewer budget airline this fall.

Low-cost Icelandic airline PLAY is halting all U.S. flights by October, the company announced in a press release, and flights to Logan Airport will end Sept. 15, according to the airline’s website.

The airline announced in October that it was scaling back U.S. service in 2025 after “disappointing” profits in the North American market.

The airline used Reykjavík as a connection between the U.S. and Europe, and will now focus on travel from Iceland to leisure markets in Europe. PLAY will use four aircraft for those flights and lease the remaining six planes to other airlines.

Two of PLAY’s largest shareholders will make a takeover offer for all outstanding shares in the company and delist it from the stock exchange, according to the company. The takeover group is led by CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson and Vice Chairman of the Board Elías Skúli Skúlason.

“This is primarily a plan for practical changes to the operations of the Icelandic airline PLAY,” said Ólafsson, in a statement. “We’re focusing on the profitable aspects of the business—sun destination flights—and discontinuing those that have not yielded results.”

The airline’s branding and aircraft appearance will remain the same.

“We look forward to continuing to foster competition in the aviation market with our red aircraft and Icelandic crews. Our main goal remains to offer Icelanders affordable flights to the sun,” said Ólafsson.

PLAY, which launched in 2021 and began flying out of Logan Airport in 2022, is known for its inexpensive international flights, pay-for-what-you-need model, and frequent sales.

The carrier operated at five North American airports: Logan Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, New York Stewart International Airport, and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport near Toronto. The airline has already ended flights at all but Logan Airport, New York’s Stewart, which ends Sept. 1, and Baltimore, which ends Oct. 24.

Passengers flying from Iceland will not notice any changes in service, according to the airline.
