A fire has shut down London’s busy Heathrow Airport, disrupting travel for hundreds of thousands of travelers including some at Logan.
Flights to and from Heathrow Airport were canceled Friday due to a fire at a substation two miles from the airport, reported the Associated Press, and at least 1,300 flights have been affected.
U.K. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called the fire, which knocked out a backup generator as well as the electrical substation that powers Heathrow, “catastrophic,” reported the AP.
Officials at Massport, the agency that oversees Logan, shared the following statement in response to the fire: “Due to the fire at Heathrow flights to London have been delayed and cancelled. We urge passengers to check with their airline before coming to the airport.”
Massport spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan told the Boston Globe that about seven flights depart for Heathrow daily from Logan.
“Flights later tonight are showing on time, but expect those to change,” she told the Boston Globe.
Heathrow officials don’t know when power will be restored, but say the disruptions are expected to last for days. The fire is under investigation and officials are saying there is no evidence of foul play.
Travelers can check the status of their flight at Massport here.
