JetBlue just crushed a brand new category in the World’s Best Airline Awards.
The airline, a leading carrier at Logan Airport, ranked No. 1 among hybrid airlines in the annual AirlineRatings.com awards. Hybrid airlines offer a mix of full-service and low-cost elements, according to the site, and “have emerged as a significant force in the aviation industry.”
“Historically, airline awards have been conventional and, in our view, no longer accurately reflect the evolving aviation industry or the needs of the modern traveler,” said Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com, in a statement. “Hybrid airlines now represent a significant portion of the market, particularly in Europe and the Americas. By adopting the hybrid model, these airlines remain competitive against low-cost carriers on short- to mid-range routes while continuing to offer a premium product on long-haul flights.”
The top hybrid airlines had to meet the following criteria, according to AirlineRatings.com: a minimum seat pitch of 30 inches in economy class and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. Airlines with recliner seats in business class and in-flight entertainment were ranked higher, the site noted.
“JetBlue has pioneered the hybrid airline model, setting a standard that larger competitors have since imitated,” wrote Business Traveler.
JetBlue beat out Canadian airline WestJet, which ranked second in the category.
“While both airlines strike a balance between affordability and quality, JetBlue’s broader range of complimentary perks gives it the edge,” Petersen told Business Traveler.
JetBlue has a typical seat pitch of 32 to 33 inches in economy class and features free high-speed Wi-Fi and inflight entertainment as well as complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. What’s more, JetBlue’s premium Mint class offers lie-flat seats.
