Spirit Airlines is suspending operations at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, N.H. in May.
The Florida-based low-cost carrier, which provides nonstop service to Orlando and seasonal service to Myrtle Beach, S.C. from the airport, is suspending service on May 8 due to “ongoing operational constraints related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine availability and seasonal demand for our MHT flights,” wrote the airline in a statement.
Spirit, the largest operator of GTF-powered (geared turbofan) NEO aircraft in the U.S., according to Reuters, has been dealing with engine issues since last summer.
“This decision reflects our continuing efforts to make necessary strategic shifts to enable Spirit to compete effectively in the current environment,” wrote the airline about suspending service in Manchester. “We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience, and those with reservations for May 8 or later will be offered a refund. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is a great partner, and we look forward to returning with seasonal service next winter.”
The airport, located less than 50 miles from Boston, served 1.2 million passengers in 2023 and currently services five airlines: American Airlines, Southwest, United Airlines, Avelo Airlines, and Spirit. Delta Air Lines pulled out of the airport in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Spirit, which joined Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in 2021, was the first new airline at the airport in 17 years.
“MHT is grateful to Spirit Airlines for their service to the Manchester community for the last few years,” wrote the airport, in a statement. “We understand that difficult decisions have to be made in light of the Pratt and Whitney engine issue. It is important to note that this is a pause in service, not a withdrawal in service. MHT stands ready to warmly welcome Spirit back to the Manchester market when the time is right for them.”
Manchester-Boston Regional Airport announced on Feb. 20 that it will add Sun Country Airlines in August, which will offer the only nonstop service from New Hampshire to Minnesota.
The airport was named the best domestic airport of 2023 by Travel + Leisure readers.
