The airline will no longer allow passengers to wear face coverings made with mesh or sheer material as well as masks equipped with valves, the airline announced Monday. Passengers may wear a plastic shield in addition to a mask, but not in lieu of one.

The decision comes following information from the CDC indicating that those types of masks “don’t effectively block respiratory droplets,” according to the airline.

Additionally, passengers with medical conditions or disabilities who are unable to wear face coverings must now go through a “personal medical assessment” before they are cleared to fly.

“Guests requesting an exemption should arrive at the airport early as the assessment may take up to one hour,” according to the airline.

“We are adjusting and reinforcing our layered safety protocols to ensure we’re providing the highest level of comfort and protection for our employees and guests,” Jeff Helfrick, vice president of airport operations at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation in keeping Hawai‘i a safe destination.”

Hawaiian Airlines has required face coverings since May 8. All passengers age 2 and older must wear a face covering at the airport and on their flight. Last month, Hawaiian began requiring that passengers complete a health acknowledgment form during the check-in process, stating they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and will wear a face mask or covering for their entire trip.

Last week, American Airlines announced it will ban face coverings made of mesh or lace, as well as coverings with exhaust valves or vents, beginning Aug. 19.
