As the airline industry grapples with decreased demand due to the coronavirus pandemic, American Airlines announced an updated policy Tuesday that allows more flexibility for customers traveling this summer.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline is waiving change fees on tickets purchased on or before April 7 for travel booked through Sept. 30, 2020. The waiver applies to any type of fare, customers are allowed to change their origin and destination cities, and travel credits are good through Dec. 31, 2021, according to the airline. However, customers must pay any fare differences if applicable. The airline also announced it is waiving change fees on the purchase of new tickets through May 31.

Last week, American announced summer schedule changes due to low demand. The changes, according to the press release, include suspending 25 summer seasonal flights until 2021, delaying the launch of new routes and new winter seasonal service, and suspending more than 60 percent of international capacity for the peak summer travel season versus the same period last year.

One new route that has been delayed due to the pandemic is American’s nonstop service from Logan International Airport to London Heathrow Airport, which was to begin on March 29. That route will now begin in October, according to the airline.
