Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich has submitted a new redevelopment proposal after withdrawing a previous application due to community concerns.
The hotel had proposed razing the property’s Snow Inn and Channel House and replacing them with an upgraded hotel, doubling its square feet. That proposal was withdrawn in March after the Cape Cod Commission raised coastal resilience issues and neighbors complained of potential traffic issues, reported Cape Cod Chronicle.
The new proposal, filed with the planning board Oct. 10, was created after months of community engagement and “is designed to balance local needs, environmental sustainability, and economic growth,” according to a press release. It includes adjustments to building size, flood resilience, and traffic management.
The new plan reduces the amount of rooms from 80 to 72 and the size of the project from 83,307 square feet to 75,322 square feet, reported the Cape Cod Chronicle. It also features a new wastewater system outside the floodplain that will reduce nitrogen discharge and improve Wychmere Harbor’s water quality.
In regard to traffic, the plan proposes improved signage, staggered event times, a full-service valet, off-site employee parking, and housing more event-going guests at the popular wedding venue so the amount of “in and out” car trips is reduced, according to the release.

The hotel says the project will lead to expanded year-round and seasonal jobs, as well as significant tax revenue to support local services.
The new proposal is the result of “extensive listening sessions with neighbors, town officials, and stakeholders,” according to the release, and will include ongoing collaboration with public safety and emergency services.
