Travelers who didn’t make it to that quintessential New England summer destination this year are not out of time, according to Thrillist.

The website recently posted a list of 12 iconic summer vacation spots that are actually better in the fall and included three spots in New England: Chatham, Mass., Portland, Maine, and Newport, R.I.

“Secluded beaches, sleepy main streets, and cheaper accommodations await,” wrote the website.

In Chatham on Cape Cod, which is “filled to the brim with lighthouses, stunning beaches, local seafood, and Main Street charm,” fall visitors can enjoy Oktoberfest and Pumpkin People in the Park. During the latter, local businesses create pumpkin people that are on display in Kate Gould Park every October.

The crowds thin out in Portland, Maine just after Labor Day, wrote Thrillist, which added, “but you can still spend the day out on the water in Casco Bay or peruse charming shops along cobblestone streets without breaking a sweat.”

What’s more, the lobster tastes even better in the fall, according to the website, due to their softer shells after molting.

In Newport, the city’s “historic streets and grand mansions take on a serene atmosphere, with vibrant fall foliage adding to the gorgeous environs,” wrote Thrillist.

For gorgeous fall walks, the website recommends checking out Cliff Walk and the Norman Bird Sanctuary and Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, which offer “ogle-worthy leaf-peeping opportunities.”
