Although February stakes its claim as the shortest month of the year, Boston isn’t short on things to do during the month — from snowboarding competitions to iconic romance flicks, fitness classes to yoga on ice (yes, that’s a thing). And with Valentine’s Day right in the middle of the month, you’re going to love these 10 things to do in February that won’t cost you a dime.
Adults of all skating levels can begin their day with gliding and stretching
during IceFlow Yoga on Ice. Hosted by Elin Schran at the beautiful Frog
Pond rink on Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 at 7:30 a.m., this hour-long class focuses on
connecting breath with movement as you glide together to music and
enjoy the present moment. Bring your own skates or rent a pair for $18.
(Boston Common Frog Pond, 38 Beacon St., Boston)
New artworks have popped up all over downtown, thanks to a Canadian
art initiative known as WINTERACTIVE. From giant googly eyes stuck on
the side of a building to enormous tentacles stretching through the
cityscape, the displays feature interactive elements designed to brighten
Boston’s downtown neighborhood during this dreary time of the year. The
walkable, outdoor art exhibition inspired by the vibrant winter festivals
seen throughout Québec Province will remain on view through Mar. 29.
Make your own path to see all 18 – it’s an estimated 30-minute walk (or
1.25 miles). (various locations throughout Boston)
Add a few new line dances to your repertoire at these weekly classes that
are open to all fitness levels as part of the Boston Parks Winter Fitness
Series. The Boston Rhythm Riders rotate moving from high to low impact
line dances throughout the hour-long classes held Thursdays in February
at 6:30 p.m. (Hyde Park Community Center, 1179 River St., Boston)
The Boston Public Library’s newly launched monthly Adult Craft Night is in
full swing with Stained Glass Window Clings on Feb. 5. Drop by anytime
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to relax after a long day with some crafting. They will
provide materials (while supplies last) and instruction for this month’s
event, including paints, brushes, and templates. When you’re finished, you
can take your creations home to add some color to your windows. (30
South Street, Jamaica Plain)
Celebrate community at Moakley Park with its Winter Warmer — a free, fun
afternoon complete with warm drinks, yummy snacks, games, crafts, and
more. Meet at the basketball courts near the stadium on Feb. 7 from 2 to 4
p.m. to enjoy s’mores, popcorn, and hot cocoa, as you spread the love by
making Valentines for community elders, grab your next read at the book
table, and chat with friends around a roaring fire. (450 Old Colony Ave.,
Boston)

Boston Bikes, in collaboration with MassBike, is hosting a winter group
ride series. Don your helmet (and insulated gear to fight the winter winds)
for a chilly slow-paced ride on Feb. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on a mix of
bike paths and streets. Your reward for finishing strong? The ride ends
with free hot chocolate. While the location is yet to be determined, riders
will take to the streets somewhere in East Boston this month. Registration
is required. (meeting place provided before the event, East Boston)
Regardless of your relationship status for Valentine’s Day, Movie Night at
Élevée hits all the right notes with its screening of “How To Lose A Guy In
Ten Days” on Feb. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. The movie night at the South End
women’s clothing boutique is free, as are the snacks and drinks, but you’ll
need to register. (2 Dartmouth St., Boston)
Head into the season of smooch with some Valentine’s Day-inspired style
as the Liberty Hotel’s expansive lobby turns into an interactive fashion
show with a show from local designer Lidiya Romanchuk with Liya Kay
Productions. Held on Feb. 13, Valentine’s Day Fashionably LATE begins with DJ beats at 8:30 p.m., followed by models strutting through the lobby from 9 to 10 p.m., posing on tables, riding the escalators, and weaving through the crowd (Liberty Hotel, 215 Charles St., Boston)
Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon celebrating the richness of African
American art and culture with activities and music as the Boston
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presents an Afternoon of
African American Culture for Children. The afternoon event on Feb. 14
from 1 to 3:30 p.m. is for youth ages 4 to 12 and celebrates the richness of
African American heritage through storytelling, music, hands-on activities,
and cultural experiences. This year’s program theme is “Rooted in Our
Culture, Grounded in Our Legacy,” and healthy snacks will be provided.
(Yawkey Boys & Girls Club of Roxbury, 115 Warren St., Boston)
Boston City Hall turns into a snowboarding park on Feb. 21 when Red Bull
Heavy Metal brings some of America’s top snowboarders to compete for
the first time in the city. The event will take place from 2:30 to 6 p.m. and will
be led by X Games Gold Medalist and Snowboarding phenom Zeb Powell.
Three hundred tons of snow will be shipped in, as Boston’s City Hall Plaza
becomes the spot for three differentiated competition zones, each
highlighting different aspects of street snowboarding. Riders will tackle
custom designed rails, gaps, and creative features that will challenge even
the most experienced snowboarders. (1 City Hall Sq., Boston)
