See the Oscar-winning ‘CODA’ on the big screen — in the city where it was filmed

“We're going to bring our Oscars to share and celebrate with you all in Gloucester," promised Best Supporting Actor Troy Kotsur.

Following its historic win at the Oscars last weekend, “CODA” will grace the silver screen for just one week.

Gloucester Cinema will show “CODA,” which tells the story of the only hearing member of a deaf family in Gloucester, from April 1 through April 7.

The unlikely Oscar-winning film has numerous ties to the Boston suburb — perhaps most notably that most of the movie was filmed in Gloucester. Troy Kotsur, who won best supporting actor for his role as a fisherman, thanked Gloucester in an interview with GBH News — and promised a return trip to the Cape Ann community.

“Gloucester, I really miss you. I miss all the Popeyes and fishermen out there. I’m just so grateful for the entire community of Gloucester and their support to make our film happen. Without you, I wouldn’t be here today,” Kostur told GBH News through an interpreter. “We’re going to bring our Oscars to share and celebrate with you all in Gloucester.”

“CODA” went three-for-three at the Oscars, winning best picture, best supporting actor and best adapted screenplay. Cambridge native Sian Heder, who wrote and directed the film, spent summers in Gloucester as a child.

Kostur became the first deaf man to win an acting Oscar and said his win is resonating with the deaf community — his phone has been “vibrating off the hook” with support since his historic win.

“And really, it’s been so touching. I feel so blessed and of course, extremely proud,” he said, reflecting on his whirlwind of a week. “It feels like there’s a great energy, a great positivity that finally Hollywood’s accepting a new perspective.”

There are 15 chances to see “CODA” at the Gloucester Cinema, spread out over a week. Various other Boston-area theaters will also be showing the film.
