With February’s Black History Month honoring the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history, Showcase Cinemas and the Museum of African American History | Boston & Nantucket (MAAH) have formed a new partnership that aims to raise awareness and education through film.
The two Massachusetts-based institutions bring moviegoers and history enthusiasts together for a Black History Month Film Series that will include five inspirational films selected for their historical relevance and powerful messages. Some screenings will be followed by discussions with MAAH’s historians in residence Kellie Carter-Jackson, the Michael and Denise Kellen 68’ associate professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, and Dr. Kerri Greenidge, Mellon assistant professor in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora at Tufts University.
“We look forward to working with MAAH to amplify conversations on topics in support of their mission, including explorations of race and the struggle for human rights, starting with our jointly curated programming for Black History Month,” said Rebecca Stein, vice president of marketing and partnerships of Showcase Cinemas, in a statement.
“Through this partnership, we hope to make history more accessible and increase public curiosity about the rich complexities of African American contributions to our greater American story,” added Dr. Noelle Trent, president & CEO of MAAH, in a statement.
Participating Greater Boston theaters include Showcase Cinema de Lux at Legacy Place in Dedham and Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph. Films will also be shown at select Showcase locations in New York and Ohio.
The Black History Month Film Series schedule:
Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.: “Harriet” — Following the film that tells the story of the inspirational life of iconic American freedom fighter and escaped slave Harriet Tubman, a discussion will be held at Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph with Carter-Jackson.
Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.: “Malcolm X” — A biographical epic by Spike Lee, the film traces the path of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist leader from small-time gangster to his ministry of the Nation of Islam and eventual assassination. A discussion will follow at Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph with Dr. Greenidge.
Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.: “Loving” — The film follows the courage of real-life interracial Virginia couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, whose arrest for their marriage in the ‘60s began a legal fight that eventually ends with the Supreme Court’s historic decision to protect interracial marriages. A discussion will follow at Showcase Cinema de Lux Legacy Place with Dr. Greenidge.
Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.: “Selma” — The film chronicles Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts to secure equal voting rights via an epic march in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama — an event that became a civil rights movement milestone victory.
Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.: “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” — An intimate look at the acclaimed novelist’s life and art, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works such as the novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula,” and “Song of Solomon.”
