The days of mindlessly buying Trader Joe’s pre-sliced manchego might be numbered after this wine and cheese pairing class at BRIX, a wine shop in the South End. BRIX Owner Klaudia Mally will guide a small class of 12 through her expert tips of how to pick the perfect cheese and what to sip with it. If the thought of “I should start a podcast” has ever crossed your mind, this workshop in Allston might be for you. Author and podcast host Karen Fabian will lead this 90-minute workshop designed to get your podcasting juices flowing. She’ll cover everything from picking your podcast niche, to booking and interviewing guests, to scheduling and structuring for your show (Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; 267 Western Ave., Boston; $25)
We’re talking about Max Fosh, a YouTuber and comedian with 4+ million followers and billions of views, whose schtick is all about exploiting life’s loopholes. See: Him becoming the world’s richest man for seven minutes and *technically* winning an Oscar. You can watch him live at The Wilbur on Nov. 13 for an 80-minute set of loophole hunting and exploiting. If you’re in your thirties, flirting, and thriving? Craving new connections? Head to Trident Booksellers’ 30s speed-friending event on Nov. 12. Skip the Small Talk is hosting, so expect prompts that jump over the awkward questions about jobs and hobbies and get right to the deep stuff. Not in your thirties but still looking for pals? Zip over to Winter Hill on Nov. 16 for an afternoon of speed-friending over scones and sweets. (Various times, dates, and locations)
It may not have a flashy IG or TikTok account, but here’s your quarterly reminder that the Boston Public Library’s events page is stacked. This week’s line up is no different: There’s a bike repair workshop with Boston Bikes on Nov. 12, a sip n’ stitch event for fellow crafters and crocheters on Nov. 13, and a night of Scrabble with the Roslindale branch’s Scrabble club on Nov. 14. Best of all, they’re all free. (Various dates, times, and Boston Public Library branch locations; free)
Going to the movies costs an arm and a leg these days. But the Roslindale Film Society is fixing that with a screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” at The Square Root on Nov. 14. Consider it a meeting of the minds for movie buffs. Plus, food and drink will be available for purchase onsite. (Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.; 2 Corinth St., Boston; $10 in advance, $12 at the door)
Boston’s Wicked Queer: Docs Film Festival returns this week, celebrating Queer filmmakers that share untold stories of activism, love, and resistance, from George Michael to Janis Ian. You can catch the fest’s line up of films at the MFA, Brattle Theater, and Institute of Contemporary Art throughout the week. Note: There will be a virtual encore of the films from Nov. 19-30. (Friday-Friday, Nov. 15-22, various times and locations)
The folks from The Koji Club, Boston’s first sake bar, are hosting a guided sake tasting at the Museum of Fine Arts Friday night. A ticket gets you access to the 60-minute tasting where you’ll sample three different sake styles and some light bites. Bonus: Stick around after to explore the galleries — they’ll be open till 10 p.m.! (Friday, Nov. 15 from 6 to 7 p.m.; 465 Huntington Ave, Boston; $75 for members, $90 for non-members)
The Snowport may steal the holiday market spotlight, but it certainly ain’t the only one in town. Time Out Market will deck the halls on Nov. 16 for its Holly Jolly Holiday Market, showcasing handcrafted gifts from LGBTQ+ makers and vendors. Expect everything from artisanal jewelry to holiday-themed art. Plus, there will be live music, festival drinks, and seasonal snacks to get you in the holiday spirit. (Saturday, Nov. 16 from 12 to 5 p.m.; 401 Park Dr., Boston; free)
Being sober (or sober curious) during the holidays can be rough. But Dray Drinks, Boston’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop, is here to help. The shop is hosting a Thanksgiving-themed NA cocktail-making class with local mixologist Smoke King Kev on Nov. 17 where you can shake and stir up a list of booze-free bevs that everyone can enjoy.
