Thanksgiving football returns to Fenway Park

Boston's ballpark transforms ahead of the holiday to host four games featuring eight high school teams.

According to the Baseball Cube, only one Winchester High School alumnus has ever played Major League Baseball. That was Art Johnson, a lefty who pitched in 49 games for the Boston Braves between 1940-42 — but because he was a National Leaguer, and because there was no interleague play, none of those games was played at Fenway Park.

It won’t be the big leagues, and it’s not even baseball, but a whole bunch of kids from Winchester High are about to get their chance to compete at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. The Sachems will take on the Tanners of Woburn on Wednesday, Nov. 23, as one of the four Thanksgiving football games Fenway will host on the Tuesday and Wednesday nights leading into the holiday.

East Boston and South Boston will get the action started Tuesday at 5 p.m., and those schools will be followed by Andover vs. North Andover at 7:30 (or 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest). Wednesday’s slate kicks off with Blackstone Valley vs. Nipmuc Regional at 4 p.m., with Woburn and Winchester scheduled for a 6:30 start.

Tickets are $20 apiece, and are good for admission to both games on a given day. If you’re planning to attend with a particular rooting interest, be sure to use the ticket link tabbed for that school; the last thing you want is to be wedged into a tight Fenway seat next to a fan of your bitter rival.
