Mass high school football Super Bowls returning to Gillette Stadium

Finalists from all eight MIAA divisions will compete at the home of the Patriots over three days.

As the No. 10 seed in the MIAA’s Division 8 football tournament, the Blue Devils of Randolph have spent quite a bit of time on the bus this postseason.

For their first-round matchup they went all the way out to Lee, which totaled about 270 miles, roundtrip. When they won that one, they earned another westward journey, this time a 180-miles there-and-back jaunt out to Ware. When they won that one, too, they earned a neutral-site semifinal at Lincoln-Sudbury against Oxford. That one was closer, but still roughly 35 miles in each direction.

Their reward comes on Dec. 1. And they’ll find it about 20 minutes from home.

Randolph will take on South Shore League rival Hull in the first of eight state championship football games scheduled for Gillette Stadium this weekend, kicking off Wednesday’s tripleheader slate at 3 p.m.

In years past, the championship games at Gillette have been played from just after dawn to well past dusk on a single day, but the success of the New England Revolution put a wrinkle in those plans this year, so the contests have been spread over three days.

There could be an adjustment to the schedule if the Revolution were to lose their first-round matchup against New York City FC, but here is the schedule, in chronological order:

Dec. 2

3 p.m. – Division 3
No. 1 Marblehead (10-0) vs. No. 3 North Attleboro (7-3)
5:30 p.m. – Division 1
No. 5 Springfield Central (9-2) vs. No. 2 Central Catholic (10-1)
8 p.m. – Division 2
No. 3 King Philip (9-1) vs. No. 1 Catholic Memorial (11-0)

Dec. 6*

Division 6 – 5 p.m.
No. 2 Abington (10-1) vs. No. 4 Rockland (9-1)
Division 4 – 7:30 p.m.
No. 1 Scituate (10-1) vs. No. 2 Duxbury (9-1)

*These games would be moved to Dec. 3 if the Revolution lose to NYCFC on Nov. 30.

The marquee event looks like Thursday’s action, with the Division 1 and 2 contests featuring Central Catholic and Catholic Memorial teams that have spent much of the season near the top of the Globe’s top 20 Eastern Mass rankings.

Tickets for the Super Bowls are on sale now, with all tickets required to be purchased online, in advance. No tickets will be sold at Gillette’s box office on the day of the games.
