The GlobeDocs Film Festival returns for five days of screenings, showcasing 30 new documentary films — including two world premieres — at theaters across Greater Boston and online for viewers nationwide.
The festival, produced by The Boston Globe, will open with “A Life Illuminated” by award-winning director Tasha van Zandt, on Oct. 22 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, which follows renowned marine biologist Dr. Edith Widder.
Two world premiers include “Cathedrals,” created by Don Wright and Dan Algrant and directed by Algrant, and “Croft,” directed by Brandon Millett and Jonathon Link.
The Centerpiece film, “The Stringer” directed by Bao Nguyen, shows the investigation into the famous Vietnam War photograph, “The Terror of War.” The festival offers an opportunity to watch one of the Sundance Film Festivals’ “most reviewed films in the festival’s history” before its premiere on Netflix this fall.
“Ask E. Jean,” directed by Ivy Meeropol, which follows the advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, the only woman to beat President Donald Trump in court, will close the in-person festival.
“We love that GlobeDocs brings the best documentary filmmakers to thoughtful Boston audiences,” said Linda Henry, CEO of Boston Globe Media. “As we celebrate year 11 of this impactful and well-regarded festival, we continue to witness the power of documentary filmmaking in sparking meaningful conversations and opening up new perspectives.”
In-person screenings will take place at Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport. Virtual screenings will be available to all viewers in the U.S.
All screenings will be followed by a discussion with its filmmakers, moderated by Boston Globe journalists. Attendees to the event will have the opportunity to vote on the Audience Award, which will be given to both a feature film and short film.
