Fenway Sports Management, in conjunction with ESPN Events, will make another attempt to bring college football’s bowl season to Boston.
The Wasabi Fenway Bowl is set to take place inside the iconic stadium on the morning of December 17, featuring teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and American Athletic Conference. The specific squads will be determined based on a variety of factors, chiefly including how things play out over the course of the season this fall.
According to Julie Barry, vice president of global brands and communication for Wasabi, the inspiration behind the event is to “create a memorable new sports tradition in New England,” with organizers also acknowledging a tradition of Fenway football that dates back almost a century.
Last year the ballpark played host to a number of high school games, though its attempt at hosting its first bowl game was thwarted for a second consecutive year when players from the University of Virginia tested positive for COVID and were unable to travel for the contest. The Cavaliers had been invited along with the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University.
The cancelation of the 2021 game didn’t stop organizers from fulfilling their philanthropic mission of working toward equitable and quality education across New England, however — and organizers have already said they’ll announce a similar charitable mission attached to the game. Ticket information will also be forthcoming as the game draws nearer.
