Following one of the great regular-season runs in MLS history, the New England Revolution saw their 2021 title hopes spoiled in the opening playoff round, when the New York City Football Club came to Foxborough and ultimately advanced on penalties. NYCFC went on to win the MLS Cup that New England had designs on claiming.
Nine months later, the Revs get their chance at a measure of retribution.
And, more pressingly, a chance to solidify their place in the 2022 postseason, too.
Since their playoff meeting last November, NYCFC has been excellent – its gilded playoff performance propelling it into a 2022 season where it has proven itself to be one of the best and highest-scoring teams in the Eastern Conference. En route, the club has twice handled the Revolution. The first came in the opening round of the U.S. Open Cup tourney, with the other a 4-2 result at Yankee Stadium in early July. (Revs Coach Bruce Arena partially blamed that one on the playing surface.)
New England, meanwhile, has undergone significant changes since last season, and was accordingly inconsistent over the first five months of the 2022 campaign. By late July they were on the outside looking in at the playoff picture, and had lost franchise goalkeeper Matt Turner to a transfer. After taking on NYCFC, the Revs will have only five regular-season contests left on the slate.
Kickoff for the Sunday match is at 8 p.m., but the late-night start is made more palatable by a Monday holiday – and the fact that, a month out, tickets were widely available for as little as $22 on the secondary market.
