The hub has long been a hotbed for college hockey, and based on this season’s early results you’d be hard pressed to find a better area for the women’s game. Entering Halloween weekend, the four Beanpot schools had a combined record of 17-3-2, with three of the programs ranked among the nation’s top 10.
Two of them — No. 4 Boston College and No. 6 Northeastern — face off twice in a 24-hour span this weekend, starting Friday night at Chestnut Hill, then heading toward Huntington Avenue for a matinee rematch on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies have reigned as Hockey East’s regular-season champs the past three seasons, while that was the Eagles’ perch in each of the five seasons prior, and this year they’re tied atop the league standings after the first full month of the campaign. Northeastern comes in riding a three-game winning streak that followed a couple of early losses, with BC looking to extend a 6-0 start that includes five one-goal wins. Goalie Abigail Levy has been huge in that effort, though it’s the Huskies’ Aerin Frankel who skates in as the only netminder in the nation with a higher save percentage after more than three starts.
Both will have their gloves and blockers full with the amount of talent on their other side in what promises to be an intense test — and perhaps a precursor to some even higher-stakes action in the late winter and early spring. And it’s all an especially great take considering admission to Friday night’s game at Conte Forum is free, while tickets for Saturday at Matthews Arena are just $10.
