Ain’t Too Proud immediately reached smash-hit status when it first hit Broadway in 2019. Now, the jukebox musical chronicling the career of the Temptations and nominated for 12 Tony Awards heads out for its first national tour, stopping in Boston from April 19 through May 1.
From growing up in Detroit, to releasing a slew of hits with Motown Records in the 1960s and ‘70s, to induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, the Temptations helped define R&B and soul as we know them.
Three of their hits, “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” and “Just My Imagination,” are on the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock ‘n’ Roll.
This musical by three-time Obie Award winner Dominique Morisseau tells the quintet’s story, from brotherhood to betrayal, loyalty to political conflicts, as the band topped chart after chart and rose to fame during the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement.
With their familiar harmonies and tight choreography, the Temptations cranked out 14 R&B number-one singles and four Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.
The show’s star-studded crew includes choreographer Sergio Trujillo, who also choreographed Jersey Boys, and who won a 2019 Tony Award for his work on Ain’t Too Proud, plus director and two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, also of Jersey Boys. Boston is one of 50 cities on the tour’s schedule this year. Tickets are currently on sale through Ticketmaster.
