When Josh Kelley goes through his songwriting process, he makes sure the lyrics, tempo and song structure are down. It wasn’t always this way, but he says it is “better for me.”

Kelley, a singer songwriter whose music has been dubbed pop country, has had success on the adult Top 40 with the songs “Amazing” from “For the Ride Home,” off his debut album of the same name. Then, on the country side, his seventh album and first full country effort, “Georgia Clay,” hit the top 20 on Billboard’s country chart, as well as also being on the pop chart, according to All Music.

Like a fair share of Americans in 2020, Kelley — who happens to be married to actress Katherine Heigl, with whom he has three children — did quarantine as well. However, he also has a home studio built inside a barn on their property, and he managed to record two albums.

Kelley released “Unplugged from Upstream Studios,” an acoustic album, this past spring, just months after dropping “My Baby & The Band,” a studio album, in November.

On his acoustic album, Kelley told NPR that creating it had to do with the pandemic and engaging with his fans online.

“I found that when I involved them in my process, I learned a lot,” he said. “That made me realize that I should’ve been doing this the whole time — I never should’ve needed a pandemic to hit for me to start doing that. This record is a way to give back to the fans. Through social media, I asked them which songs they wanted to hear.”

Kelley is to take the City Winery stage on Saturday, Nov. 6.
