Back when Pat Metheny headlined the Wilbur Theatre in March of 2014, he quipped from the stage: “We’re our own opening act.” At the time, his Pat Metheny Unity Group consisted of sax player Chris Potter, bass player Ben Williams, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi. So yeah, plenty of talent to make plenty of noise over the course of a two-hour set.
Flash-forward seven-plus years and the southern-born jazz guitarist is back at the Wilbur, but with a smaller group this time around. His Pat Metheny Side-Eye boasts James Francies on keys and New Orleans jazz drummer Joe Dyson on the kit. Fans of the guitarist know, though, that no matter who his sidemen are, Metheny will be laying down the licks on a wide array of instruments, from his 12-stringed jazz guitar to his guitar synthesizer to the famed Pikasso I, custom-made for Metheny back in 1984 when he asked Canadian luthier Linda Manzer to make him a guitar with “as many strings as possible.” Metheny plays all 42 strings on that beast. And he plays them all very well.
