Max Weinberg may be an amazing drummer — have you listened to “Candy’s Room” lately? — but, unlike most of the other members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, he’s not what you’d call a singer. (Although he’s given it the old college try on occasion.)
But never fear – the former longtime bandleader for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” has gotten around that little obstacle by assembling a killer ensemble that he’s taken on the road in recent years, under the moniker Max Weinberg’s Jukebox. And like a jukebox, they play, well, pretty much everything.
“We’re not imitating the records,” Weinberg told the Asbury Park Press. “What I try to get across to people is it’s a party so we try to embody the joy those records gave us — that’s important. It’s not chamber music. It’s meant to be played and have a good time with.”
So with the aid of stalwart Asbury Park players Glen Burtnik, Bob Burger, and John Merjave — who all happen to have vocal chops, in addition to their skills on guitar and bass, thank you very much — Weinberg will be taking requests aplenty when he brings Max Weinberg’s Jukebox to City Winery March 23. See if you can stump him.
