Death Cab for Cutie — the Washington state-based indie rock mainstay now celebrating their 25th year as a band— will be riding some fresh energy when they pull into Boston this October.

Death Cab is putting out its latest record, “Asphalt Meadows,” on Sept. 16 — about two weeks before the band is set to play Leader Bank Pavilion.

“Foxglove Through the Clearcut,” the first single off of the forthcoming album, is a bit of sonic new ground for Death Cab. Rolling Stone calls the track “quasi-experimental.”

And Vanyaland puts it this way: “It’s a slow-burn thriller that cascades through unfettered emotion and post-rock grandeur.”

“’Foxglove’ is by far the most personal song on the record,” frontman Ben Gibbard said of the number. “While I was writing it, I thought I was merely the narrator. But the longer I sat with it, I realized I was both the protagonist AND the narrator.”

Check out the new sound — and maybe a few old favorites — on Oct. 1.
