Boston hosts its annual disco in honor of Boston-born legend Donna Summer on June 16. Folks can gather in Copley Square to dance the night away with live music and tribute performances at this free and open event.
Donna Summer was born in Dorchester in 1948 and raised in Mission Hill. Known professionally as Donna Summer, LaDonna Gaines was inspired by the counterculture of the ‘60s, starting her career as the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band called Crow. After rising to fame in the ‘70s with her roles in musicals like “Hair,” Summer became known nationally as the “Queen of Disco.”
She released 14 Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits in her lifetime, and remains one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She died in 2012 of lung cancer and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
The 2022 Donna Summer Disco Party will feature music by DJ Vince 1, a tribute performance by Mary Gaines Bernard, Donna Summer’s sister and longtime backing vocalist, plus an appearance by her nephew O’Mega Red and other members of her family.
