There are more women in the beer industry than contemporary marketing might have you believe (shout-out to that one Coors Light commercial). Women were historically society’s brewers before Prohibition, but the rebounding era restricted gender roles. The craft beer renaissance of the last couple decades has welcomed more women to the bar, however. Just look at the annual Pink Boots Society beer industry-collaboration that coincides with Women’s History Month in March, which centers female-brewed stories in taprooms and on package-store shelves, and raises funds to help women access education in the brewing industry.
This spring, Cunard Tavern is using its platform to highlight women in beer. At the East Boston restaurant, chef Anthony Pino and sous chef Nicolette Brangiforte host monthly five-course beer-pairing dinners, and from March through July the theme is Female-Led Beer. An invited beverage-industry professional is on site during each of five Wednesday night events to share insight about the chosen beers and describe pairings with each dish.
The series kicks off Wednesday, March 23, with EBO & Co. Grocery beer buyer Alexandra Cross leading the pairing. Stay tuned for a preview of the food menu. Tickets include five courses plus five beer pairings.
Future Female-Led Beer Dinners at Cunard Tavern feature Dorchester Brewing Company cofounder and partner Holly Irgens on Wednesday, April 13; Timberyard Brewing Co. brewer Shannon Jutras on May 17; Bone Up Brewing Co. cofounder and brewer Liz Kiraly on June 15; and Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co. co-owner Meredith McNamara on July 12.
