The oldest annual marathon in the world returns to town right on schedule this year. On Patriots Day, the third Monday of April, the Boston Marathon once again runs from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston, bringing some of the world’s most elite runners to the city for the 26.2-mile road race.

The event typically attracts up to half a million spectators all along the route, which begins out in Hopkinton, has its halfway point in Wellesley, and finishes on Boylston Street in Boston. Bank of America will sponsor the 2024 marathon, and start times range between 9:02 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. depending on the division. Kenyan runners Hellen Obiri and Evans Chebet won last year’s men’s and women’s marathon divisions, respectively.

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has organized the event since its inception in 1897. So far this year, the B.A.A. has accepted over 22,000 qualifiers to run the marathon — this year’s qualifying times are stricter than ever. And, as is tradition, the Red Sox play a home game at 11:10 a.m. on April 15, this year against the Cleveland Guardians. Spectators leave the game when many runners are finishing up the last mile of the marathon, cheering them on.

The B.A.A. holds other running events on the weekend of the marathon, like the Boston 5K, an invitational mile, and a relay. For more details about this year’s race, head to baa.org/races/boston-marathon.
