Theater productions taking the stage around Boston this spring

Plan your theater outings this March through June.

From musicals to plays to dance shows, there’s no shortage of theater productions taking the stage in Boston this spring. The new Tony award-winning production of “Company” comes to town in early April. You can also expect performances by returning troupes like Ringling Bros. and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, plus a handful of brand-new shows, too, like the world premiere of a “Great Gatsby” adaptation with music by Florence Welch.

Mrs. Krishnan’s Party at the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre at the Emerson Paramount Center

March 27 — April 7

The Indian Ink Theatre Company brings this intimate show to the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre at the Paramount this spring. The immersive show follows Mrs. Krishnan at her DJ tenant’s house party, and it even includes cooking food live on stage (which the audience gets to sample at the end).

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Agganis Arena

March 28 — April 7

The “Greatest Show on Earth” returns to the Agganis Arena this year for a week and a half of acrobatics, trapezists, clowns, feats of strength, motorbikes, and escape artists.

Company at the Citizens Bank Opera House

April 2 — 14

The classic Steven Sondheim musical gets a gender-bent twist in this new national tour coming to Boston for two weeks in early April. While the original 1970 show starred a 35-year-old single man whose friends are all married, this new tour, which won a Tony for best revival, stars Britney Coleman.

Book of Mountains and Seas at the Emerson Paramount Center

April 19 — 21

A new work by award-winning composer Huang Ruo and MacArthur Fellow puppeteer/artist Basil Twist, “Book of Mountains and Seas” uses larger-than-life puppetry and a polyphonic chorus to tell Chinese creation myths.

Hadestown at the Boch Center Wang Theatre

April 23 — 28

“Hadestown,” a contemporary, sung-through musical that combines two myths — Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and Persephone — swept at the 2019 Tony awards. It’ll play eight times at the Wang this April.

Carmen at the Citizens Bank Opera House

April 25 — May 5

This Boston Ballet show features two different ballets — a performance of the tragic “Carmen” by choreographer Jorma Elo, followed by a performance of “Kingdom of the Shades” from Act III of the 1877 ballet “La Bayadère.”

Clue at the Emerson Colonial Theatre

April 30 — May 5

Based on the 1985 movie and the classic board game, “Clue” is a new comedic whodunit play coming to the Emerson Colonial Theatre this April and May.

May 2 — 5

Started in 1958 at the ​​92nd Street Y in New York City by Alvin Ailey, this world-renowned African-American modern dance company, named “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” by a 2008 U.S. Congressional designation, comes to the Wang early this May.

Boston Ballet’s Spring Experience at the Citizens Bank Opera House

May 9 — 19

Boston Ballet’s annual spring show features three contemporary ballets: “Blake Works III (The Barre Project)” by William Forsythe which first premiered in Boston in 2022; Jiří Kylián’s “Bella Figura,” which celebrates the human form; and the world premiere of a new work by choreographer Ken Ossola inspired by Michelangelo sculptures.

Toni Stone at the Huntington Theatre

May 17 — June 16

Written and directed by playwright Lydia R. Diamond, “Toni Stone” tells the true story of a Black baseball player in the ‘40s and ‘50s who became the first woman to play professional baseball on a men’s team in the Negro Leagues after being barred from female ones for her race.

Gatsby at the American Repertory Theater

May 23 — July 21

The classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel comes alive in this world-premiere musical featuring music by Florence Welch (of Florence + the Machine). Directed by Rachel Chavkin, who won a 2019 Tony for her direction of “Hadestown,” the show runs for almost two months this spring and summer.

Come from Away at the Citizens Bank Opera House

May 28 — June 2

“Come from Away” first premiered on Broadway in 2017, inspired by the true story of the small town in Newfoundland that housed 7,000 stranded travelers in the week following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. It won a 2017 Tony award, and comes to Boston for eight shows this spring.
