Soccer players Kristie Mewis and Sam Kerr took to social media Monday to announce that they are expecting a baby.

The announcement comes after Mewis and Kerr revealed their engagement in an exclusive with People magazine last year.

Mewis, a Boston College alum and Hanson native, shared her pregnancy in an Instagram post with the caption, “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” She currently plays for West Ham United in the Women’s Super League and has made over 50 appearances for the U.S. national team.

Kerr, an Australian striker for Chelsea, also shared the post with her followers.

The two received homophobic backlash in the comments section of the post.

At a news conference, Chelsea women’s team manager Sonia Bompastor called the comments “unacceptable.”

“That’s just crazy for me to understand how people can react like this,” Bompastor said, according to the AP.

Chelsea captain Millie Bright said she is “really happy for them both.”

“That’s what we’re all put on Earth for, is to bring joy to one another,” Bright told the AP. “We’ve not got the time of day for certain comments.”
