New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has been dealing with an abdominal injury that showed up for the first time on the Patriots’ injury report last week.

At the time, Newton dismissed concerns about the injury, calling it “wear and tear” players normally experience during an NFL season.

“I’m feeling as good as I should be feeling,” Newton said at the time. “You just have to stay on top of things, see what the trainers say. Just keep getting treatment.”

But according to Jay Glazer on the FOX pregame show prior to New England’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, Newton’s injury might be a little more serious than he let on.

“I am told that in fact he has been struggling with that abdominal injury,” Glazer said, as transcribed by WEEI’s Ryan Hannable. “It’s caused him an awful lot of pain for the last couple of weeks here, but because they have the short week they forced him to rest, and as of a result of that today he felt better than he has the last few weeks.”

Newton has had an up-and-down season. In Week 6, he was intercepted three times in a 33-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and he has given the ball away at inopportune times in other games as well.

Before last week’s game, Newton was asked if his abdominal injury contributed to his struggles this season.

“I’m focusing on the Chargers game,” Newton said. “Like I said, to keep everything kosher, and everything up and up. I’m never one to blame, I’m just focusing on the Chargers game.”

The Patriots rolled over the Chargers on Sunday, recording a 45-0 blowout in which Newton ran for 48 yards and threw for 69 with one touchdown. New England has won four of its last five games entering Thursday’s contest with the Rams.
