Sports Q: Who should the Red Sox’ main target be in free agency?
Manny Ramirez might be one of the most popular Boston Red Sox players in recent memory, but his final season with the team was in 2008 and some fans may have forgotten him in the interim.
The evidence: A recent viral video on TikTok in which Ramirez is waiting in line for food in an Australian restaurant behind a woman and a man wearing a Red Sox hat. Ramirez glances at the camera, then taps the man.
“Excuse me,” Ramirez says politely in the video. “Nice hat. Can I ask you a question? Who is your favorite player?”
The man’s response is jumbled with background noise, but he can be heard saying, “Are you serious?” and perhaps “It’s my girlfriend,” before asking “Why?”
“No, no,” Ramirez says, walking away. “It’s just a nice hat.”

Rachel Balkovec, a New York Yankees hitting coach who filmed Ramirez’s interaction with the fan in line, also captured a little girl in an autograph line getting his autograph.
“Who’s your favorite player?” Balkovec asked.
“David Ortiz,” the girl answered.
Panning back and forth between the girl and Ramirez, who was signing the autograph and chuckling, Balkovec asked again and got the same answer.
“Sorry, Manny,” she says to the grinning former player.

Ramirez, who was traded from Boston to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, signed with the Sydney Blue Sox in August as a player-coach, where Balkovec is a hitting coach. Balkovec’s TikTok features several clips of Ramirez’s adventures playing baseball overseas.
