Rene Rancourt will sing the national anthem at the Winter Classic Alumni Game
On December 31, the day before the Winter Classic.
On New Year’s Day, the Bruins and the Canadiens will face off at Gillette Stadium during the 2016 Winter Classic. And earlier this week, the National Hockey League received a bit of blowback following their announcement of who would be performing at the event.
The NHL enlisted Jordan Smith, the recent winner of NBC’s The Voice, to sing the national anthem. Rene Rancourt, the beloved national anthem singer for the Bruins at nearly every home game, was notably not mentioned in the NHL’s news release.
Then, Thursday, the NHL announced that Rancourt will instead sing at the Winter Classic Alumni game in Foxboro on December 31, the day before the Winter Classic.
In other Winter Classic news, Mayor Marty Walsh’s plan to livestream the event on a big-screen TV in Copley Square was canceled due to a broadcast dispute. A Walsh spokesperson said city officials still hope to find a resolution.
Gillette Stadium is being transformed into an ice rink:
