Deflategate may not end anytime soon

The only way the Deflategate scandal will come to a swift conclusion is if both sides reach a settlement, a new report says. The Red Sox offense explodes over the weekend. Tim Tebow makes his NFL return. And John Farrell stays positive after his lymphoma diagnosis.

Even after Judge Richard Berman makes a ruling, Deflategate could continue: “With neither the NFL nor the NFL Players Association showing any real inclination to resolve the litigation arising from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension, a ruling from Judge Richard M. Berman seems more likely. And some think the ruling will mark the end of the #DeflateGate saga. It won’t be.’’ (ProFootballTalk.com)

Led by Jackie Bradley Jr., the Red Sox had an amazing offensive weekend:

“Jackie Bradley Jr. did his part to lift team spirits—and his batting average—with an historic offensive performance in the Red Sox’ 22-10 win over the Mariners on Saturday. The 25-year-old outfielder with far more appearances for Pawtucket than Boston in 2015 played a key role in the team’s continued offensive surge following manager John Farrell’s announcement that he will be stepping away from the team for the remainder of the season to undergo treatment for lymphoma.’’ (Boston.com)

Mike Reiss continues the discussion on Ted Wells’s “independence:’’ “At the NFL’s owners meeting on Wednesday in Chicago, commissioner Roger Goodell once again referred to the Wells report as “independent.’’ A natural follow-up question to me is how he defines “independent’’ because attorney Ted Wells himself acknowledged in testimony at Tom Brady’s appeal that NFL general counsel Jeff Pash did some “wordsmithing’’ to the Wells report. Also, Lorin Reisner, a co-author of the Wells report, cross-examined Brady at the appeal hearing on behalf of the NFL. Based on what is now on the public record, I think it’s fair to challenge Goodell’s use of the word “independent’’ when it comes to the Wells report.’’ (ESPNBoston.com)

Diagnosed with lymphoma, John Farrell hopes to return to baseball next season: “The 53-year-old Farrell described the cancer as being localized and highly curable. The Stage 1 lymphoma was discovered Monday when he had surgery in Detroit to correct a hernia. ’It’s been a shocker,’ said Farrell, who broke down when he described telling his players what had happened.’’ (The Boston Globe)

What do you make of the Patriots so far? “It’s almost like people are waiting for Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler to turn into the proverbial pumpkin, waiting for his fairytale to end. But it hasn’t. The cornerback has thus far taken his shining moment and run with it. He’s grabbed hold of the top spot at left corner, taken ownership of Darrelle Revis’ former spot, and backed it up with play worthy of a No. 1 corner.’’ (Boston Herald)

Bill Belichick says upcoming practices with Saints are more about evaluation than competition: “’This isn’t really a game plan . . . what plays we run against the Saints or what they run against us,’’ said Belichick in a conference call Sunday afternoon. “It’s more for us to evaluate individual players against different matchups and letting your players learn the execution of the plays against a different type of defense or against a different type of offense than what we’ve been seeing over the last two weeks from ourselves.’’’ (The Boston Globe)

Red Sox’s first-rounder reportedly gets a promotion: “After getting adjusted to playing with a wood bat, 2015 Red Sox first-round pick (No. 7 overall) Andrew Benintendi has been on a tear at the plate of late. The center fielder out of the University of Arkansas has hit .405 with three home runs over his last 10 games and has been promoted to Single-A Greenville, according to a source.’’ (WEEI.com)
