“Pure elation’’ was how U.S. head coach Jill Ellis described the feeling of winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Those two words just about summed up the reactions of the 23 U.S. national team players following their historic 5-2 win over Japan in the final on Sunday in Vancouver. The dominant win avenged a heartbreaking defeat in the 2011 final to Japan and gave the U.S. an unprecedented third Women’s World Cup title.

“I’m just so, so proud of this team and these players, and so happy for them, so happy for every little girl that dreams about this,’’ Ellis told FOX on the field not long after the final whistle began her team’s celebrations.
