The New York Jets spent big money upgrading their defense this offseason, but they’ll start the 2015 campaign without one of their best players on that side of the ball.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson is suspended for the first four games of the upcoming regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Richardson issued an apology through the team.

“I apologize for letting down my family, teammates, this organization and the fans. However, words aren’t enough. This is something that can only be addressed by how I handle myself from this point on. I don’t want this to take away from what the team is trying to accomplish. While I won’t be there at the start of the regular season, I will do whatever I can to support my teammates until I’m able to return to the field.’’

Richardson, selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, recorded 11.5 sacks over his first two seasons in the NFL. A stout run defender, he was named the 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year.
