Bill Simmons reportedly in talks with HBO

The Boston Globe

The Sports Guy may be on his way back.

The Hollywood Reporterran a giant story on the far-reaching empire that is cable TV behemoth HBO, and within the piece noted that “if all goes as planned,’’ the network is discussing a “major, multipart deal’’ with former ESPN columnist and Grantland founder Bill Simmons.

Simmons was let go by ESPN last month with his contract set to expire in September. Save for a handful of Twitter and Instagram posts, he’s been mostly silent since then. HBO boasts over 100 million subscribers and recently launched a streaming service, HBO Now, which is available for $14.99 per month and can be obtained without a cable subscription.

The THR report, which noted Simmons’s “several suitors,’’ cites “multiple sources’’ and “insiders’’ who say conversations “have focused on a TV show — something Simmons is believed to want — along with heavy digital extensions.’’

Simmons, an executive producer of ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary series, would also appear to be a strong fit with HBO’s work in the documentary genre.
