The U.S. soccer stars who produced the greatest goal in Women’s World Cup history teamed up for yet another score. With the U.S. deadlocked, 0-0, with Nigeria in the waning moments of the first half of their Group D matchup on Tuesday, striker Abby Wambach scored off a corner kick from midfielder Megan Rapinoe. Unlike their iconic connection against Brazil in the 2011 Women’s World Cup, Wambach didn’t finish this one with her head. Wambach, the leading scorer in women’s soccer history, deposited the ball in the back of the net with a brillant volley as she finished her run in on goal.

Nigeria would not find an equalizer in the second half, and the U.S. would hold on for the 1-0 win. The pivotal goal was the 14th of Wambach’s World Cup career. She currently trails Brazil star Marta (15) for most in tournament history.

Following a 3-1 win over Australia and a 0-0 draw with Sweden, the 1-o victory against Nigeria sent the U.S. through into the Round of 16 as the Group D winner. The next game for Wambach and her teammates is scheduled for June 22 in Edmonton. Their opponent in the knockout stage will be determined Wednesday.
