This 5-year-old made a chart of the best athletes ever, and it’s amazing

Earlier this week, Mitchell & Ness, the vintage sports clothing company, compiled a list and graphic of the greatest NBA players in history by number.

A five-year-old from Acton named Pete took the idea a step further.

As per Pete’s father Scott, the kindergartener at the Douglas School created his own list of the “100 top professional athletes’’ by number as a project celebrating his 100th day of school this year. Pete, an “avid sports fan’’ according to Scott, made sure his list covered all sports, not just basketball, and color-coded the names to reflect which sport each of choices play (red for baseball, blue for football, green for basketball and black for hockey, obviously in a local spirit).

Pete displays a pretty healthy sense of history, naming legends such as Bill Russell, Bobby Orr, Ted Williams, Tom Brady and, breaking from the Mitchell & Ness list, Larry Bird.

But in other spots, he’s a bit more a product of his time.

“For some of them — especially the higher numbers — I gave him three or four options, told him their history and their stats as best I could and he chose one,’’ Scott said in an email to Boston.com. “Personally, I would’ve chosen Yaz for No. 8, but he wanted Jeff Green.’’

How awesome it is to be a Boston sports fan
