BU’s Jack Eichel Wins Hobey Baker Award

With his team one win away from a national title, Boston University’s Jack Eichel picked up was named the winner of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in college hockey for the 2014-2015 season.

Eichel, 18, became only the second freshman to win the award, joining Maine’s Paul Kariya, who took the honor in 1993 before a long and productive NHL career. Eichel is the third Terrier to win the Hobey Baker, along with Matt Gilroy (2009) and Chris Drury (1998).

The freshman center led the Terriers to both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles en route to their first Frozen Four and national championship game appearances since 2009.

Eichel, projected to be a top-2 pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, made an immediate impact upon college hockey during his freshman year. Eichel led the nation in points (70), assists (44), and plus/minus (+51).

The other “Hobey Hat Trick’’ finalists for the award were Harvard forward Jimmy Vesey and North Dakota goaltender Zane McIntyre. Vesey led the nation in goals with 32, while his 58 points were third behind Eichel and BU’s Evan Rodrigues (61). McIntyre played a nation-leading 2,493:21 minutes for North Dakota, while posting a 2.05 goal against average and a .929 save percentage.
