If there’s one thing Liverpool Football Club most proudly trumpets, it’s tradition. And two thirds of the way through a middling season in the Premier League, supporters of the English soccer team were likely already in a bad mood.

So it’s no surprise that fans were a bit irked when the official team sponsor, Dunkin’ Donuts, tweeted a photo of an alternative club crest, replacing Liverpool’s two eternal flames, which memorialize the 96 people who died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, with iced coffees.

Dunkin’ Donuts deleted the tweet and issued an apology soon after.[fragment number=12]

“We apologize for any insensitivity regarding our tweet supporting an LFC-themed promotion featuring the LFC Crest,’’ said the statement. “As a proud partner of LFC, we did not intend any offence, particularly to the Club’s supporters. We have removed the tweet and halted the campaign immediately.’’

Dunkin’ Donuts have been an official sponsor of Liverpool since January 2014. They also began tweeting individual apologies to those offended.
