Goal of the World Cup Awarded To Colombia’s James Rodriguez
James Rodriguez, 23, of Colombia has been voted the winner of FIFA’s 2014 Goal of the Tournament for his “volley’’ goal against Uruguay in the round of 16, the organization announced today.
According to FIFA, over four million users voted for Rodriguez’s goal, pushing Robin van Persie’s flying header goal against Spain into second place.
Rodriguez is the third consecutive South American to win the award. Argentina’s Maxi Rodriguez won in 2006 and Uruguay’s Diego Forlan won in 2010.
James Rodriguez’s goal involved him trapping the ball with his chest, twisting around, and slamming the ball into the back of the net — all without the ball touching the ground.
He was the top scorer of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with six goals, making him the Adidas Golden Boot winner as well.
He is reportedly leaving his current team, Monaco, for Real Madrid in a nearly $110 million deal.
