It’s A Good Thing Players’ Salaries Won’t Determine Today’s US-Germany Match

If the outcome of today’s US-Germany World Cup match was based on players’ salaries, the Americans wouldn’t stand a chance.

According to Forbes, “the combined paycheck of the three highest-paid German national players is more than what the entire US squad earns.’’

Yes, you read that right.

Add up the salaries of Mesut Ozil, Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger or do $18 million plus $13 million plus $13 million. If you don’t have a calculator close by, (or if you already fell out of your desk chair), that rounds out to a cool $44 million bucks.

Add up every single member of the US team’s roster and you would get… $26 million.

An even sadder stat: Clint Dempsey, the highest paid player for the US, got a contract worth $6.7 million this season (half of Schweinsteiger’s pay).

Don’t feel too bad for Dempsey. Forbes reports that he will probably be able to “cash in on lucrative endorsements from Nike, Pepsi, and Upper Deck’’ in the near future.

The US plays Germany at noon ET today and the Americans need a draw to advance. If US wins, they will top the group.
