Not-so shocking development: Rays attendance plummets

Well, here’s a shocking development. Rays attendance is down in Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Tribune reports that “through the first 19 home games, fan turnout at Tropicana Field was down 29 percent compared to the first 19 games of last season. That’s the biggest percentage drop in the major leagues.” Of course, the Tampa “fans” will tell you that’s because of the stadium location in St. Petersburg, the excuse they’ve used for 13 years or so. Nice try. TV viewership is also down 34 percent. Time for a splash.

Writer Michael Sasso tries to pinpoint the reasons for the drop, mentioning the economy, the loss of Carl Crawford, and the fact that the Rays have yet to host the Yankees this season. But, I kid you not, he doesn’t bring up the obvious excuse that the Lightning are still playing, so I’ll do it for him. It’s because the Lightning are still playing.

There. Until next year when we try to figure this all out again.
