Double pursuit?

Could it be down to two teams for Roger Clemens to choose from?

Clemens, of course, hasn’t even tipped his hand as if to whether he plans to play another season – but has made it clear it would only be in Houston, Boston, or New York f he does decide to return. John P. Lopez of the Houston Chronicle seems of the thought that the Astros are clearly choice No. 3, despite being the Rocket’s home team.

“Clemens certainly would consider being able to pitch from the comforts of his hometown and playing in a weaker division, but the Astros do not compare to the Sox or Yankees when it comes to resources or supporting cast,” Lopez writes. “The Red Sox believe they are close to becoming an overwhelming club. But with Papelbon in the bullpen, the choices for the No. 5 spot are the flaky Tavarez, Jon Lester, who is recovering from non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma, and unproven Kyle Snyder, who has had four arm operations.”

The Yankees could actually be at a disadvantage, despite the presence of Clemens buddy Andy Petttite. Injuries have debilitated the starting staff, leaving Carl Pavano, of all people, as the team’s probable Opening Day starter. Chien-Ming Wang will be out nearly a month, and even Pettitte’s back is acting up on him. With the Yankees possibly off to a rough start, if the Red Sox are serious about their Clemens pursuit, it’s imperative they get off to a good one.

Clemens’ decision, after all, won’t be based on need, but rather which team gives him the best chance to finish out his career on top.

Oh, and cash, of course.
