Head games
Curt Schilling has let it be known he is going to be more aggressive at pitching inside this spring. Chris Duffy certainly doesn’t think that’s such a great idea.
Hours after he was hit in the head by a Schilling pitch in Pittsburgh’s 10-7 win over Boston Saturday, Duffy’s father called his son, a native of Brattleboro, Vt., fighting for an outfield job with the Pirates, and informed him of Schilling’s indifferent reaction to the situation, according to today’s Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
“I didn’t know how credible my dad’s source was,” Duffy said. “Then I read the paper and was kind of, like, ‘What’s up?'”
Schilling seemingly blamed Duffy for not getting out of the way of his pitch, traveling at 90-plus miles per hour.
”Bottom line is, that ball should not have hit him. You’ve got to be able to get out of the way of that . . . There’s just no way that they shouldn’t be able to get out of the way of that pitch.”
Duffy is listed as day-to-day with a concussion, and admitted to feeling “a little slow.”
“I saw the tape — there was no way I could have moved out of the way. For him to just blow it off, that’s not great sportsmanship. There is a certain way to handle things. That wasn’t it.”
